LEADERSHIP, EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND EMPATHY

We have a new President!  It’s interesting how events can call out and help direct your actions.  Let me explain.

Last week one of our readers followed-up on the Healthy Tension email.  He suggested we consider the topic of “Emotional Intelligence” (EI).  Well, Friday’s inauguration caused me to reflect on what I have heard and seen since the election. I listened to President Trump’s speech, heard the media’s reaction and watched Saturday Morning’s March. That being said, the suggestion could not have been better timed, as now, more than ever, an understanding of the importance of EI is critical.

HEALTHY TENSION

It would seem that there is some TENSION in the air!

Over the past week I have read of and seen the continuing tension between our President-Elect and the press.  We are also witnessing the tension evident during the Senate confirmation hearings, continued/growing tension over the whole issue of hacking, and this morning we have announcements of congressional leaders planning to boycott the inauguration   All of this can just suck the energy right out of you. Likewise, we had the tension associated with the selection of the Golden Globe winners and Clemson’s comeback to win the National Collegiate Football title,   A good tension that sometimes serves to energize and invigorate.

SELF-WORTH AND CREATIVITY

A few weeks ago a former student greeted me in the store.  At first I didn’t recognize her.  We initially made that “I know you, from many years ago” eye-contact.  She approached me and said, “Hi Mr. Wolf, how are you doing?”  I smiled and responded, “Embracing the Challenge, and you?”  She laughed and said, “I’m super-good and getting better!”  I smiled and asked her name.  We conversed for a few moments and she reminded me of the class taken with me over 30 years ago through a positive thinking club I led while principal of Mifflin’s Junior High.

INSTINCT

Over the holidays I had the opportunity to catch up with some old friends and colleagues.  We talked about everything and anything from retirement travel plans to pursuing a second career.  A comment, made by a friend who is now embracing that new career challenge, stuck with me, “You have to go with your instinct. You will feel what is right for you!”

When was the last time you went with your instinct or intuition?  Kouzes (Learning Leadership)  tells us that leadership is learned and that authentic leadership flows from the inside out.

RESOLUTIONS

Regardless of the holiday you celebrate, I hope you found time to gather with family and friends, enjoy memories of times gone by and create ones to remember in the future.  I spent the day with grandchildren…..many memories in the making!!

In a few short days, 2017 will be upon us.  For many, New Year marks a new beginning.  A time we reflect on the past and make resolutions for the upcoming year.  What will it mean for you?  Resolutions can take many forms.
