Capture the Moment

The value of a moment is found in capturing it, and letting it become a memory that brings you happiness at another time. – RW

It’s cold this morning.  I’m sitting on the deck bundled in a winter jacket and wearing a knit hat that keeps my ears and shaven head warm.  The sun is peeking through some clouds periodically.  At one moment it’s brilliant and I can feel its warmth, but a cloud snuffs it out, the cold returns and the landscape takes on a gray winter appearance.  …

One Step at a Time

“A journey of a thousand miles begins
with a single step.”
 –
Lao Tzu

One step at a time.  That’s what it’s been, literally and figuratively, as I recover from the surgery in early December.  It was just over a week ago that I was given the clearance to stop wearing the walking boot; I was delighted.  Not only had the boot become burdensome, but it was, all too often, the focus of conversations – “What happened to you?” “I remember when I had one.”

The Other Ness

“The surest sign of wisdom is a constant cheerfulness.”                                         – Michel de Montaigne

Let me ask you a question, in the two weeks since Christmas, how many times  has someone wished you happiness in the new year?  It probably started on New Year’s Eve, when countless people said, “Happy New Year!”, but since then I’m certain more than one person has expressed their wish that you find happiness this year.  Well, in the words of my mother, “If wishes were  horses, then beggars would ride!

Why Am I Doing That

“The unexamined life is not worth living”

                                                                                                          – Socrates

If ignorance is bliss then is awareness enlightenment?  No, it’s a wake-up call!  Sometimes we go through life thinking we are doing all the right things, only to discover that some of our  actions, or failure thereof, are actually compromising us.  That’s where I was.  I hit the gym everyday, watched what I ate and lived a relatively healthy lifestyle (note the term, “relatively”).  But then it was my trainer who made me aware that my recovery rates were off and suggested I see a cardiologist.

What Have You Learned?

Happiness is not something you can find,
it is a product of your actions
and the actions of those who care about you.

It’s been an interesting year!  The market took a beating, Russia invaded Ukraine, the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, extreme weather patterns have become the norm and according to Mitch McConnell the era of  bi-partisanship is over.  Good news, bad news?  Who knows; I guess it really comes down on how you look at things.  Such is the case with happiness.
